Houston Medical Center Transportation

Chauffeured car service to and from the Texas Medical Center, from the airports and hotels, with patient and family travel in mind, 24/7.

Texas Medical Center transportation from Genius Limo is chauffeured car service to and from the TMC, and it is honest about its limits: it is a car service, not medical transport.

The Medical Center runs its own shuttle network between campuses and garages, and for on-campus movement that is often the right tool. A private car makes sense when the shuttle timetable does not match your appointment, when you are coming from an airport or a hotel outside the network, or when you are too unwell to wait outdoors. Hobby is the closer airport at roughly 10 miles; Bush Intercontinental is about 28.

When a private car beats the shuttle

The Texas Medical Center operates its own shuttles between campuses and garages, and individual institutions run their own, so for moving around the complex those are usually right. A private car earns its place when the timetable does not fit your appointment, when you are arriving from an airport or a hotel outside the shuttle network, or when you are simply too unwell to wait outdoors.

What we do and do not provide

We are a chauffeured car service, and this distinction matters: we do not provide non-emergency medical transportation, stretcher transport, or wheelchair-lift vehicles. A folding wheelchair or a walker that stows in the boot is fine, and the passenger needs to be able to transfer into a normal vehicle seat with whatever help they usually travel with. If you need clinical transport, we will say so rather than take a booking we should not.

The Medical Center from the airports and hotels

Hobby is the closer airport, roughly 10 miles and 20 to 30 minutes. Bush Intercontinental is about 28 miles and usually 40 to 60 minutes, longer at peak because the route crosses the city. Patients arriving for treatment, families accompanying them and visiting clinicians all travel differently from a rushed transfer, and we handle these with the patience they need.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free shuttle to the Texas Medical Center?

Yes, several. The Texas Medical Center operates its own shuttle network between campuses and garages, individual institutions run their own inter-campus shuttles, and some patient housing providers run scheduled transport to and from treatment. If your journey is between buildings inside the complex, or between an affiliated hotel or apartment and your treatment centre, the free option is usually the right one and we would tell you so. Ask your care team or your housing provider what applies to you before booking anything private.

When does a private car service make sense instead of the shuttle?

When the shuttle timetable does not match your appointment, when you are travelling from an airport or a hotel outside the shuttle network, when you are too unwell to wait outdoors or manage a transfer between vehicles, when you are carrying equipment or bags, or when you need door-level pickup rather than a stop. Also when the same journey repeats over weeks and the reliability matters more than the cost. If none of those apply, the shuttle is genuinely fine.

Do you provide medical transport?

No, and this distinction matters. We are a chauffeured car service. We do not provide non-emergency medical transportation, stretcher transport, wheelchair-accessible vehicles with lifts or ramps, or any service requiring a medically trained attendant. If you need any of those, you need a licensed medical transport provider, not us, your care team or social worker can point you to the right one. What we provide is a comfortable private car with a professional chauffeur for someone who can travel seated in an ordinary vehicle.

Can you take a wheelchair?

A folding wheelchair or walker that stows in a boot, yes, and the passenger needs to be able to transfer into a normal vehicle seat with whatever help they usually have. A vehicle with a ramp or lift for someone who stays in their chair is a different category of service and we do not provide it. Tell us the specifics when you book and we will give you a straight answer rather than finding out at the kerb, which is the outcome nobody wants.

How far is the Texas Medical Center from the Houston airports?

Hobby is closer, roughly 10 miles, typically 20 to 30 minutes. Bush Intercontinental is about 28 miles and usually 40 to 60 minutes, longer at peak because the route crosses the city from north to south. If you are choosing flights and treatment is at the Medical Center, Hobby will usually get you there with considerably less travel at the end of a tiring day.

Can you meet us at the airport when we fly in for treatment?

Yes. We track the flight, so a delay does not mean anyone is waiting or rebooking. For arrivals we would usually suggest meet-and-greet rather than kerbside, the chauffeur waits inside at baggage claim with a name sign and helps with bags, which matters more than usual when the person travelling is unwell or the family is arriving somewhere unfamiliar.

Can we arrange the same chauffeur for every appointment?

We arrange it where we can, and we will tell you honestly when we cannot rather than promising it. For treatment that runs over weeks or months, having the same person is worth more than most people expect, they learn the routine, know which entrance you use, know whether you want to talk, and you stop having to explain the situation every time.

Can you set up recurring transport for a course of treatment?

Yes, and it is the main reason this page exists. A standing arrangement means the schedule is held in advance rather than booked appointment by appointment, one contact handles changes, and it is billed periodically rather than per journey. If your schedule shifts, and treatment schedules do, you change it once with us rather than making a new booking each time.

What if my appointment runs long?

It often will, and we plan for it. Return journeys for treatment appointments are arranged as an on-call collection rather than a fixed time wherever possible: you message when you are ready and the vehicle comes. Fixed return times are the thing that causes stress on treatment days, and there is usually no need for one.

Where exactly will you collect us?

At the entrance you actually use, not a general drop-off point. The Medical Center is a complex of many buildings with multiple entrances, and the difference between the right door and the nearest door can be a long walk for someone who has just finished treatment. Tell us the building and entrance, or tell us your appointment location and we will work it out beforehand.

Do you serve institutions other than MD Anderson?

Yes, the whole Texas Medical Center complex and the surrounding hospitals, including Houston Methodist, Texas Children's, Memorial Hermann and the associated clinics and research institutions, plus the outlying Houston-area treatment centres north, west and south of the city.

We are travelling from another country for treatment. Can you help?

Yes. International patients and families are a substantial part of the Medical Center's population and the logistics are more involved, an arrival after a long flight and customs, a first journey somewhere completely unfamiliar, and then a repeating schedule for weeks afterwards. We handle the arrival and the ongoing schedule as one arrangement, and chauffeurs are briefed accordingly.

Can family members travel with the patient?

Yes. A sedan comfortably takes the patient plus two, and an SUV or van takes larger family groups. On treatment days it is often better to book a slightly larger vehicle than strictly needed, there is more room, easier access, and nobody is squeezed at the end of a difficult day.

How much does it cost?

Journeys are quoted flat and all-inclusive before you book, covering tolls, wait time within the agreed window and any parking. Recurring schedules are quoted against the pattern rather than per journey, which is usually better value than booking each appointment separately. Gratuity is stated explicitly on every quote. Send us the pattern you need and you will get a real figure.

Is there help available if we cannot afford private transport?

Yes, and you should look into it before booking anything with us. Several charities and non-profit organisations provide free or subsidised transport for patients travelling to treatment, and hospital social workers and patient support teams can tell you what you qualify for. Some patient housing providers include transport. We would rather you use those than spend money you need elsewhere.

Can you collect prescriptions or make a stop on the way home?

Yes, tell us when you book. A pharmacy or grocery stop on the way back is straightforward to build into the journey and much easier than making a separate trip later. Additional stops arranged in advance are included in your quote rather than added afterwards.

What if the patient is unwell during the journey?

Our chauffeurs are not medically trained and will not attempt to provide care. If someone becomes unwell in the vehicle, the chauffeur will stop somewhere safe and call emergency services, and will contact whoever you have given us as the emergency contact. We say this plainly because you should know exactly what to expect rather than assume a level of care that is not there.

Do you take Medicaid, Medicare or insurance?

No. Private chauffeured car service is not a reimbursable medical benefit and we do not bill insurers. If your transport is covered under a benefit programme, that will be a licensed medical transport provider rather than a car service, and your care team or insurer can arrange it. Ask them before paying privately, you may be entitled to transport you are not currently using.

How far in advance should we book?

For a single journey, twenty-four hours is comfortable. For a recurring schedule, as soon as you know the treatment dates, that lets us hold the pattern rather than fitting each appointment around other bookings. Same-day requests are often possible; tell us if it is urgent and we will say honestly whether we can cover it.

Do you serve the outlying Houston treatment centres?

Yes. Several institutions operate locations outside the Medical Center campus across the wider Houston area, north, west and south of the city. Those journeys are longer and traffic-dependent, so we schedule them against the appointment time rather than a nominal drive time.

Can you take us to hotels and patient housing near the Medical Center?

Yes, including the hotels attached to and around the complex and the apartment and housing providers used by longer-staying patients. Do check first whether your accommodation already runs its own transport to treatment, several do, and if yours is one of them, use it.

Are your chauffeurs vetted?

Yes. Every chauffeur operating on our behalf is commercially licensed, background-checked and drug-tested, and carries commercial liability insurance. For recurring medical schedules we brief the chauffeur on the routine, the entrance, the timing, whether help is wanted with bags or a chair, so the arrangement does not have to be re-explained every visit.
