It is genuinely well connected by light rail too, and for one person travelling light the MAX Red Line is often the sensible choice. A car earns its price with luggage, with a group, or on an early departure when the train is not running yet.
The Willamette and Columbia crossings decide a Portland journey. The Fremont, Burnside, Ross Island and Marquam bridges all behave differently by hour, and a run to Vancouver, Washington means the I-5 or I-205 crossing, which can add 20 minutes at the wrong time. The Hillsboro and Beaverton tech corridor is a 25 to 45 minute run west on the Sunset Highway and is where most corporate work actually goes.
