MCI is further out than people expect — about 20 miles north of downtown and normally 25 to 40 minutes on I-29. The new single terminal replaced the old three-horseshoe layout, which is a genuine improvement, but the distance has not changed and a morning departure still needs planning rather than optimism.
Kansas City straddles two states, and much of the corporate work is on the Kansas side — Overland Park and Leawood — while the hotels, the Plaza and the stadiums are in Missouri. A day that mixes the two is short in miles and crosses a state line twice. Downtown itself is compact and the streetcar covers the Crossroads-to-River Market spine, which is genuinely useful and we will say so.
